The song was written and produced by The Suspex (Mitch Allan and Jason Evigan), along with The Monsters & Strangerz; a writing and production group composed of Clarence Coffee Jr., Alexander "Xplicit" Izquierdo, Jordan Johnson, Stefan Johnson, and Marcus "Marc Lo" Lomax. Additional vocal production was carried out by Dan Brook. In March 2013, the song, then known as "Rule the World", was leaked onto the Internet, and was later uploaded to Gomez's official YouTube account.
